Throughout its history, Ras Al Khaimah has been committed to upholding human rights and providing equality and social justice to all people living within its borders.

One of many initiatives which are testament to this commitment is the Aman Shelter for Women and Children in Ras Al Khaimah, founded in 2017, which provides refuge and comprehensive support to victims of violence and human trafficking.

The Shelter provides free short-term social, educational, and legal care to victims, with the aim of rehabilitating and integrating them back into society, as is the third non-profit humanitarian safe house authorized in the UAE for women and children who are victims of violence and trafficking.

Each person is carefully assessed to ensure appropriate, tailored plans are developed to support, empower, and care for them.

The Shelter can handle up to 25 cases at any one time for a period of up to six months and since its establishment, the Shelter has supported over 198 people (as of September 2023).

More widely, the Shelter works to raise awareness of violence against women and children through participation in events and conferences in the UAE and globally, and its contribution has been referenced and acknowledged before the United Nation’s Human Rights Council in the United Arab Emirate’s submission as part of the country’s Universal Periodic Review.
